A lesson in Monitoring Biases with Aziz Ansari and Jimmy Fallon

In class last week we learned about different biases that marketers may encounter while monitoring their social media platforms. We learned about the extremity bias which is when extreme opinions are oversampled and negativity bias which is when negative opinions are oversampled.

This video from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon proves that a lot of social media is full of these biases. The most clear example of that is when you look at reviews which are typically only left by people that feel extremely negative about a certain product or service. In this video Aziz Ansari and Jimmy Fallon read dramatic yelp reviews. While this video is really funny it also does a nice job showing how these biases come into play in the real word. Enjoy!

  1. This is a great example showing that what we observe online isn’t always representative of the overall population.
